Mike grew up in Mid-Michigan where he learned his love and appreciation of nature from his parents, Jim and Sue LeValley. He spent much of his youth hunting, fishing, camping, and generally tromping around local woodlands and fields. He moved away from Michigan for eight years to attend college in Chicago and serve as an officer in the United States Army, before returning in 2001 to earn a teaching certificate from Central Michigan University. He rekindled his love of nature, and especially the Chippewa River watershed, while working for the Mt. Pleasant Parks and Recreation Department for several years. Mike has also worked as the Education Coordinator for the Isabella Conservation District., From 2009-2019, he presented over two thousand environmental education programs to students in Isabella County elementary schools. Mike joined the CWC Board of Directors in 2016, after actively volunteering with the CWC for several years, planning and leading hikes and other outings. He was a long-time time vice-president of the Chippewa Valley Audubon Club and currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education. Mike and his wife Shara live in Alma. In his spare time he enjoys traveling, reading books about science and history, camping, and nature photography.
