Invasive Species Removal Work Session @ Sylvan Solace Preserve

May 20, 2021 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

It’s field season again and that means it’s time to tackle autumn olive!
Autumn olive is a shrub native to Asia. It was planted in Michigan to provide wildlife habitat, to provide food for songbirds and gamebirds, and to control erosion. It does all of these things, but it doesn’t play well with others…
Autumn olive is a bully! It spreads like crazy. It crowds out native plants and changes the soil chemistry to reduce competition from other species. It even turns out that the nutritional value of its fruit to birds isn’t that high. Now we have these vast monocultures of a shrub that isn’t all it was advertised to be.
Join us at one of our Thursday evening work sessions in May as we work to control and eradicate this species on Sylvan Solace Preserve.
No experience necessary. We’ll provide the tools and training.
Watch the weather! In the event of rain, the work session will be canceled.
